For local families that depend on free or low cost school lunches, a returning annual program will offer children free lunches at several locations across Jefferson County.
The Summer Meals for Kids program, hosted by the Clearinghouse of Jefferson County, Jefferson County Purdue Extension and the Jefferson County Department of Corrections with Aramark, will provide fresh lunches from June 1 to July 29 for children age 18 and younger.
“We know the impact summer hunger can have on children and families. Our local school systems report that 53 percent of our children are enrolled in the free and reduced lunch program. When school meals disappear, kids experience anxiety and uncertainty, and family budgets are stretched even further,” Clearinghouse director Molly Dodge said in a release.
The 2016 program is funded by a grant to River Valley Resources from Share Our Strength, a national anti-hunger organization, as part of its “No Kid Hungry” campaign. As part of the program funding, meals will meet USDA nutrition guidelines that include “fresh, healthy items.” No reservations are necessary to participate, all families need to do is bring their child to designated locations at a certain time each day.
Beginning Wednesday, June 1, volunteers will be found at nine different locations.
In Madison, lunches will be available at Presidential Estates and Windridge Apartments and the Madison Mobile Village from noon to 12:40 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Meals will be served from 10:45 to 11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday from June 6-17 at Lydia Middleton Elementary, and E.O. Muncie Elementary. More lunches will be hosted from 10:45 to 11:30 a.m. June 20-30 at Madison Junior High School.
In Hanover, lunch sites are scheduled for Monday through Friday from 11 to 11:30 a.m. at Southwestern Elementary School, noon to 12:25 p.m. at the Hanover Manor Mobile Village on Westlawn Drive, 12:15 to 1 p.m. at Woodside Mobile Village off of Chauncey Lane, and 12:30 to 1 p.m. at West Street Mobile Village.
