As part of the National Education Association's Read Across America Month, which helps promote the love of reading, Village Lights Bookstore and The Clearinghouse will… Rock ’n’ Read Around the Clock!
Village Lights will host their sixth annual 24-hour reading marathon and children’s book drive, starting at 6 PM on Friday, March 31st, with an aloud reading for kids by of The Lorax, by Dr. Seuss, and finishing at 6 PM on Saturday, April 1st. The Lorax will be read in English by Andrew Forrester, Community Relations Director for the City of Madison, and in Spanish (El Lorax) by Shirley Kloepfer, Director of La Casa Amiga, recipient of the 2017 Jeff Garrett Community Service Award from the Madison Area Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the Human Relations Commission for the City of Madison. Volunteers to rock and read can sign up for one or more 30-minute intervals to sit in a rocking chair in the store’s front window and silently read books. BYOB (bring your own book) or borrow from the shelves. Village Lights hopes to recruit heavily from local schools and Hanover College. In addition to promoting literacy, the event is intended to benefit The Clearinghouse, a one-stop service center in Madison to co-locate charity, non-profit and faith-based services to more efficiently assist southeastern Indiana families in need. Before and during the “readathon,” Village Lights is asking for donations of gently read or new children's books, which will be distributed by The Clearinghouse to charities in the region. A portion of the books will also be channeled directly to La Casa Amiga. Visitors are encouraged to bring books to the store and drop them into the basket on the front table. Those wishing to purchase their donations at Village Lights will receive a discount. Monetary donations to “River Valley Reads,” the literacy program at The Clearinghouse, may also be delivered to Village Lights Bookstore. A special thanks is extended to food sponsors. Rockers will be fueled by The Red Roaster Coffee & Eatery and receive sweet sustenance from Horst's Little Bakery Haus, Gallery 115, and The Attic & Coffee Mill Café. Village Lights Bookstore will be open throughout the night. So hurry in, sign up, and get ready to… rock ’n’ read around the clock!
